James Whybra - Head of School (Castle @ Newbury)

I graduated from The University of Liverpool in 2005. Before completing my PGCE in Physical Education, I spent a fantastic year teaching water sports at the Portland Sailing Academy. My school career began at a mainstream secondary school in Basingstoke, where I was Head of Year and guided my student cohort all the way through to Year 11. It was during this time that I found a passion for supporting students with additional needs, eventually being asked to oversee and develop the SEND department.
My journey at The Castle School began over a decade ago when I joined as Assistant Head at Post-16. After nearly ten wonderful years in that role, I progressed to Deputy Head, and I am now incredibly proud to serve as Head of School. I absolutely love the variety that each day brings, and I remain deeply passionate about empowering our pupils to become as independent as possible.
Outside of school, my time is focussed around my family. To keep active and give myself a little space to reflect, I love to go running whenever I get the chance!
Kate Mason - Assistant Headteacher

I graduated in 2000 in Bath and taught in a mainstream school in Bristol for a while. I started at The Castle School in 2003, working in the autism resource before moving into key stage one. Working my way up through the school I am now an Assistant Headteacher. I enjoy working in different classes in the school and also spend a large amount of time doing consultancy to mainstream schools
Katie Morley - Assistant Headteacher

For over 15 years I have worked in education across 4 SEND Post-16 settings and would regard this as my specialism and interest. In 2016, I set up a new MLD provision near New Malden and in 2019, I led the new opening of an autism-specific college in Ealing. I have admired the Castle School for over 6 years, since I was first recommended to visit the WOW programme in 2019. It is a pleasure to now be a part of the leadership team to share my skills and experience and to gain new ones along the way.
Academically, I have achieved my PGCE, so I have a teaching background but more recently, a Masters in Senior Leadership with over 9 years in management. Before joining The Castle I took a gap year to enjoy time with family and friends in the northeast and spent the time learning new skills such as making jewellery. I love to travel and explore other cultures, and I am excited not only relocate to the area but to be a part of the Castle community.
Tony Trigwell-Jones - Assistant Headteacher
I studied Performance Writing at Dartington College of Arts and continue to have an interest in the arts, especially theatre. I have worked in a number of schools and other organisations in Newbury, including Mary Hare School (for the Deaf), Trinity and The Grange before coming to The Castle. This has given me some fantastic experiences and driven my passion for teaching and learning, especially with pupils who need a different approach. Outside of school, I love to keep active, running, climbing, studying and writing – one day I may even finish my novel!
Atul Attra - School Business Manager

Over the past 25 years I have worked in the corporate sector for blue chip companies such as Phillips, Quaker Oats and PepsiCo. I have gained invaluable experience in areas such as financial management, pensions, payroll, risk assessment and budgeting to name a few. Having worked at The Castle School for the past 3 years I am utilising these skills to bring in robust controls and financial management, which in turn should help the school avoid any potential deficits in the future.
Outside of work I enjoy DIY, gardening and food.
